04-20-2011 | For the girl's last night in Marathon we
joined Jim and Betty (aboard Mimi), Sue and Bob (aboard Ragtime) for a
great time at the Keys Fisheries. Raw tuna sushi, stone crabs,
beer and great friends ... it doesn't get much better than this! Friday Joysea, Joycie and Dave leave Marathon to begin the Great Loop adventure. We sure will miss all of the wonderful friends we met in Banana Bay marina. It will be fun to meet up with them again next winter. |

We finally got a break with the wind and waves this week. Angie and Pam were the lucky winners ... we made it out to the coral reef for some snorkeling. Above Angie and Pam at the helm ... that would be scary but Joysea was on auto-pilot. The weather was hot but beautiful. Above Pam and Angie snorkel with many colorful fish. The water was comfortable but the reef was crowed with boats. Arriving, we spotted a boat leaving a mooring ball and began easing toward it when a little fast boat slid in front of us. Joysea honk her horn but they didn't move until Pam yelled at them .... way to go mate! |
The girls enjoying the sun on the upper helm of Joysea. A beautiful sail boat came out to the reef with a lot of young snorkelers (behind the girls). See below for a better view of the ship. Well, we will begin the loop this week leaving Marathon Friday, weather permitting. We will be updating the blog daily, if we have Internet access ... so keep following us. We also plan to update the Google map of our location as we move north. Looking forward to moving ... starting to get way too hot down here (I know, eat your hearts out!) |

The chefs on Joysea decided to treat
themselves to a wonderful breakfast/brunch. Menu included coffee,
juice, Eggs Benedict, asparagus and pimento potato patties. Its a
real tough life living aboard Joysea:-) Tonight we walk to vessel
"Mimi" where they are providing grill baked pizza. We just have to
bring ourselves ... no dishes to do tonight. Air conditioners are on here and have been for quite awhile. Pretty warm here, but we aren't complaining. Almost forgot to mention our wieners and buns party. Our neighbor Susan and John put some pictures together on their website: I have added pictures from our wienies and buns party to our website - www.trawlersrock.com If you go to the home page, the pictures are under the heading of Marathon or Bust

03-29-2011 | Carl & Margaret's son, David and family
visited us today. It was a delight to see them. What a nice
family. The kids are very personable and polite ... good job mom
and dad!
The weather did not cooperate today, so Joysea said she is staying in her slip. We think all of the autopilot and electrical problems are resolved, but won't know until we take her out. Maybe tomorrow? Pictured to the right on the upper deck of Joysea is Joycie with the Singer family, Ben, Ashley, Andrea, Abigail, David and Emily. |

We took Joysea out today and tried for the coral reef. Once again it was a little too rough for snorkeling. Above son Keith and grandson Bradley watch from the helm. Joysea has her auto pilot on so it makes it easy to keep on track. |
The auto pilot seemed to work okay, but the
compass in it will need to be synchronized with the GPS system.
Also, we are having some electrical issues so we are having the people
who installed the auto pilot system back to see if they have some wires
crossed. Below grandson Andrew and daughter-in-law Lori enjoying the ride out to the reef.

03-19-2011 |
Our son Keith and family arrived on Thursday and on Saturday we all went to the Turtle hospital. This hospital is very unique and is the first hospital for turtles in the world. Above Bradley, Grandma Joyce, Andrew and mom Lori observe a small Loggerhead turtle that is almost recovered and will soon be release to the sea. |
Below, Bradley observes a 300 lb.
Loggerhead turtle swimming in a salt water pool. Turtles in this
pool will never be released because they have an illness or problem that
prevents them from surviving on their own.. This turtle looks huge
but this species can get up to 800 lbs. Other species, like the
Leatherback, can grow up to 2000 lbs. Now that is a lot of
turtle soup! Actually all sea turtles are protected ... no soup
here! |
03-18-2011 | Meet our neighbor who's name is Crew. Crew is a very frisky poodle mix but he is well behaved. His owners, John and Susan, really discipline him when he barks. What a great neighbor to have! Crew lives on a Marine Trader trawler and he actually has his own bedroom ... hey, what can we say, he is part of the crew! | |
03-11-2011 | Our good friends Carl and Margaret Singer
stayed with us several days/nights however the weather took a turn for
the worse. A storm hit us yesterday afternoon and although it
didn't last long, it was scary. The picture to the right shows
Carl, Margaret and Joycie standing next to the channel entrance of
Banana Bay marina. There use to be a sail boat sitting there, but
the near tropical storm winds blew it off anchor and almost into the
rocks. Quick thinking sailors tied the boat off before it was
damaged. Also two people from the marina took out a kayak, got
caught in the storm and went missing for several hours. Rescue
boats finally found them on a small island where they found some
shelter.
The small island behind Carl, Margaret and Joycie is "Pretty Joe Rock". It actually has a rental cottage on it. We were real happy to be on Joysea when the storm hit and not the little island which was totally invisible during the storm. |
Joysea refuses to go out until the winds subside so Carl and Margaret will have to visit us again .... maybe in Michigan when we are doing the "Great Loop"? |
03-08-2011 |
Monday we tried to go to the Sombrero Key reef. Half way out we decided it was too choppy so we headed to the East Washerwoman Shoal which is a documented dive site. Captain Dave was happy to be able to try out his new anchor. After some minor problems with the anchor, we were able to set it and Greg, Janaye and Chelsie went snorkeling. Unfortunately no fish were to be found. |
Chelsie and Greg helped steer Joysea once
we got into the Atlantic ocean. While cruising out, Janaye alerted
us (actually screamed at us ..OMG!!) of a huge turtle floating in
the water. And if you think the manatees are big, you need to see
one of these sea turtles. The big guy didn't feel like poising for
us and dove under the water before we could snap a picture of him. What can I say ... foxy lady above enjoying the ride:-) |
03-04-2011 |
|
Meet Chelsie's new big friend! A
large manatee came into the marina today and "diver George" helped coax
it close enough for Chelsie to pet. What an experience!
The wind was blowing hard so Joysea once again stayed tied up. It looks like it will be Monday before we get a chance to do some snorkeling at the reef. Nothing else to do today so Chelsie with friends Greg and Janaye partied all day! Hey, mom and dad, they got up this morning before 9 am so they didn't over do it too much (you owe me for this one Chelsie). |
03-02-2011 | Friends from Indiana, Gary and Judy Novak
visited us for a day/evening. We had a great time updating each
other about our children/grandchildren whereabouts. Unfortunately
the weather was windy so Joysea wouldn't let us take her out for a ride.
We did attend a surprise birthday party at the marina for Dock
Master/Captain Larry. A big turn out and lots of fun. We have our auto pilot system ordered and have a guy lined up for installation. Joysea is getting real excited about her new equipment. The other Joycie is wondering about how we are going to pay for it. Kids, kiss the inheritance money bye bye. |
|
02-22-2011 |
Today George and Pat took "Reflection" out for a ride to Johnson Keys .... yep, after all of these years at sea, they finally named an island after us! The island on the left is Johnson key and the one to the right is little Johnson key. On the bow of Reflection is George, Pat, Joyce, George's sister Pat and husband Al. We anchored here for lunch before heading back to Banana Bay. The weather was great and the bay was as smooth as a lake. |
At times the water was so clear it looked
like we could go aground even though we were usually in 7 feet of water
or more. Below captain George explains and demonstrates the
auto-pilot system to Admiral Joycie. We really think Joysea is
going to love some new equipment ... this isn't like cosmetic surgery
(no boob job here!) but more like cataract surgery. Joysea will
have eyes and be able to steer for us when in larger bodies of water.
Its not cheap ... so send Joysea money! |

Joyce's sister Patty and husband Bill,
de-board Joysea after visiting with us yesterday. We had a nice
time updating each other about kids and grandkids. This morning all of us went to our usual Sunday breakfast place, the American Legion, and enjoyed a great breakfast (way too much food!). Patty and Bill plan to stop in Everglade city on their return trip home to Punta Gorda, Florida. |
02-17-2011 | We took a trip to the coral reef and it got
a little bumpy. We actually grasped the mooring ball line,
but didn't attach it to the boat. It was way to choppy for us to
sit there and get hammered. So we headed back and did the standard
tour of sister creek. Pictured at right is terrified Lori hoping captain Kevin knows what the hell he is doing:-) Bro Kevin and Lori are leaving us today and heading somewhere up the Keys. We had a great time with lots of laughs ... ask Lori sometime about the facial cream! |
|
02-16-2011 |
Kevin, Lori, Joyce and Dave took a shuttle boat ride to Pigeon Key. This is a five acre island located 2.3 miles west of Marathon. It is connected to Vaca Key by a bridge originally built by Flagler for his Florida East Coast Railway. From 1908 to 1935 , Pigeon Key served as a construction & maintenance base camp for the railroad workers. |
You can reach Pigeon Key by shuttle,
bicycle or a scenic 2 mile walk on the old bridge.
|
02-02-2011 |
Sis Jane Ann and sister-in-law Joanie relax on Joysea as we head for the coral reef. Another vessel in the marina left before us so Joycie called Jena Star on the radio to check conditions at the reef. Captain George told us they were leaving because it was "rocking and rolling" a little to much. |
We turn Joysea and headed for sister creek,
a very protected creek that goes into Booth Key harbor . We
floated by many anchored boats and enjoyed Joycie's chicken salad
sandwiches for lunch. Below brother-in-law, Bud, and brother Larry
keep and eye out for those nasty crab pots. |
01-30-2011 | Today we took the boat out to the coral reef. Our passengers were Doug and Vicky Whaley with sister (Vicky's) Patsy and husband Pete Brandon. At right Captain Doug maneuvers Joysea thru the crab (crap) pots while Dave relaxes and snaps some photos. We fed the fish but stayed only a short time. The water was beautiful but choppy. Temperature of the water at the reef was 79.1 degrees .... and no snow .... eat your hearts out :-) Temperatures will begin to rise to the upper 70's and hit 80 later this week. Wish you were here! |

Larry, Monica, Joyce and Dave went to Key West today. Before leaving, a manatee was spotted in our little marina. Our neighbor and friend George was cleaning our other neighbor and friend George's boat bottom at the time, and decided to personally welcome the huge mammal to our marina. Manatee are not afraid of humans. As you can see George and manatee appear to be shaking hands. This manatee is huge! |
01-17-2011 | We met yesterday at Jackie and Larry's
Florida home and loaded his boat with fishing equipment and bait.
Jackie, shown standing with husband Larry, helped us cast off, but
decided to stay home. She wanted to work out and will probably be
mad at me for saying this, but she is a champion speed walker. She
still holds several records ... I just had to reveal this Jackie because
some of my kids are runners :-) |
Captain Larry first took us about 10 miles out into the Gulf where he put out a couple of chub lines (ugly smelling/looking stuff that attracts fish). Fifteen minutes later the mackerel started to hit. We caught a bunch of mackerel before deciding to move. We cruised to the 7 mile bridge in hopes of finding mangrove snapper. Sure enough, we began catching snappers, small at first but larger later in the day. We also caught a lot of grouper (above Monica and Captain Larry with grouper), but unfortunately grouper is not in season. All in all, it was a great day of fishing! Larry cleaned the snapper for us and will smoke the mackerel later .... mmmm good!! |
01-16-2011 | Yesterday we moved Joysea from slip 23 to
slip 17. We will be in this slip for the rest of the winter.
We have a different "back yard view" but like it just fine. The
biggest plus for this new location is that it is more protected from
wind and subsequent waves.
We met friends of Monica and Larry McCoy who have a place in Marathon. Larry and Jackie Reitz are from Indianapolis but stay here in the winter. Larry is taking Monica, Larry and Dave fishing this Tuesday. He has a 30 foot fishing boat with two 250 horsepower outboard engines .... fast! Dave will try to get pictures of the trip and big catch! |
|
01-11-2011 |
Larry and Monica McCoy arrived in Marathon this week and are staying at a Blue Green resort a mile south of our marina. We celebrated Joyce's birthday yesterday evening at their condo by chowing down on shrimp and grilled steaks. Today we took Joysea out to the coral reef. Above Monica and Joyce relax after attaching us to the mooring ball at the reef. Where you ask is Larry? Oh, he's asleep in the upper helm. |
Latter, we decided to scratch snorkeling
(water at the reef was 80 degrees, so no excuse not to). We fed
fish bread crumbs and saw a lot of tropical fish ... without getting
wet. Larry? Oh yeah, he is still sleeping.
We had lunch before heading back ... and you guessed it, Larry woke up for that. He actually stayed awake for the trip back to the dock. He said he really enjoyed the trip ... hey this guy is easy to please. Just put him down for a nap and he is a happy sailor. Happy birthday sis Jane Ann! |

Happy New Year from Marathon. FL! We are enjoying our first overnight guest, Linda and Brian Gilmartin from Cloverdale, IN. Today it is a little choppy in the Atlantic ocean, so we went on a two hour "dingy tour" of areas along the Gulf shore. We are hoping for calmer water tomorrow so that we can take Joysea out for a ride. Monday the Gilmartin's will be leaving us heading back to their RV in the Daytona area. We wish everyone a great, prosperous new year! |
